The workshop will take place at Ringberg Castle, the conference site of the Max Planck Society. Ringberg is located in a beautiful setting on a small mountain above the town of Tegernsee, approximately 60 kilometers south of Munich. It was built during the first half of the twentieth century for Duke Luitpold of Bavaria by his friend, the architect and painter Friedrich Attenhuber. The castle was bequeathed to the Max Planck Society (MPG) after the Duke's death in 1973, and it has since served as a main conference site for the approximately 90 individual institutes within the MPG. Schloss Ringberg is very much in demand, and we had to reserve the castle more than 18 months in advance of the workshop.
Ringberg is an
ideal venue for a small conference. The castle is completely self-contained,
providing lodging, dining, and lecture hall facilities with modern
audio-visual equipment. There are numerous hiking trails in the
surrounding mountains, a swimming pool, and several casual rooms
for impromptu discussions. Those who have attended Ringberg workshops
in the past will also no doubt remember the so-called "Hexenzimmer" (witch's
room - see image at left), an informal, rustic pub within
the castle walls.
