The Structure of ESFON

ESFON is a European Network of scientists who share a common interest in the fields of star and planet formation.

ESFON includes the following research topics:

The structure and dynamics of star-forming clouds.
The physics of star and planet formation: collapse, condensation, accretion, and outflows.
Chemical processes in star and planet formation.
Evolution of protoplanetary discs and the formation of planets.
Pre-main-sequence stellar evolution.
Characterisation and origin of: the initial mass function, multiple stellar systems, stellar clusters.

The structure of ESFON.

ESFON is comprised of a network of institutes engaged in research into star and planet formation.
Individual institutes are grouped together into ESFON Consortia.
Each country within the European Union (EU) may have up to two ESFON Consortia; other European countries may have only one ESFON Consortium. International organisations within Europe (e.g. IRAM and ESO) are represented separately.
Each institute in an ESFON Consortium must contain at least one research group working in the field of star and planet formation as specified above.
Each ESFON Consortium should select representatives for the ESFON panel: two for each EU Consortium, and one for a non-EU Consortium or International organisation.
Any European researcher who is interested may join ESFON as a member. She/he will receive information about ESFON activities, will be invited to meetings and might participate in ESFON research programs. Each member will be assigned to an ESFON Consortium even if she/he is not working at one of the institutes that forms the Consortium.
ESFON will organize a general meeting every year. Additional ESFON workshops might be organized by individual ESFON Consortia.

The ESFON PANEL

The ESFON Panel consists of representatives from each ESFON Consortium: two from each EU Consortium, and one from a non-EU Consortium.
The Panel meets at least once every year during the general meeting . At least one panel member from each Consortium must be present.
The panel elects a chairperson and a secretary who represent ESFON for a term of two years.
Under the control of the chairman the panel applies for research grants (TMR).
Consortia which apply for membership in ESFON should be approved by the panel.
The panel members represent the SOC for the ESFON general meetings .

ESFON GENERAL MEETINGS

Every year ESFON should hold a general meeting.
The general meeting is organised by the LOC in collaboration with the ESFON Panel which represents the SOC.
The general meetings cover the full range of topics within star and planet formation as defined above.
At the general meeting the ESFON Consortia and their members can present oral or poster papers. The SOC/LOC might invite external scientists for review talks.
Graduate students who are members of ESFON and who will complete their PhD thesis (with a topic related to ESFON) in the same year should be given time for an oral presentation of their thesis.
During the general meeting the panel decides on the dates and the location for the next general meeting .
