GRAVITY is one of two 2nd generation VLTI instruments. The goal is to bring the instrument to Paranal in 2015.

GRAVITY will coherently combine the light from all 4 ESO VLT 8m Unit Telescopes.

GRAVITY will provide NIR adaptive optics assisted precision narrow-angle astrometry down to 10 µas, and interferometric phase referenced imaging of faint objects with K-band magnitudes ≤ 19mag and with 4 mas angular resolution.

GRAVITY will precisely measure the fringe visibility and phase of the fringe pattern to acquire spatial knowledge of the observed object.

An overview article about the GRAVITY project is available here (pdf).
