Modeling the structure, chemistry and
appearance of protoplanetary disks
Workshop, held April 13 - April 17, 2004
Ringberg Castle, Bavaria, Germany
Rationale of the workshop:
In recent years the interest in theoretical modeling of protoplanetary disks
from various perspectives has experienced a great surge. Many of these
theoretical efforts are motivated by the enormous increase in detailed
observations of these disks: from spatially resolved imaging with the HST,
detailed ISO spectra, resolved (sub)mm line and continuum maps, (near-)
infrared ro-vibrational molecular lines, to observations with new
technologies such as the VLT interferometer (MIDI/AMBER) and the Spitzer
Space Telescope. Interested in trying to interpret this wealth of new data,
astrophysicists of various sub-disciplines (astrochemistry, hydrodynamics,
astromineralogy, radiative transfer, planet formation/migration, etc etc)
all now seem to converge on this fruitful topic of protoplanetary disks.
The workshop brought together experts in all of these
sub-fields of astrophysics, and discussed the future perspectives of
theoretical modeling and how modeling efforts in all these various aspects
can be coupled together to form a unified picture. The workshop focused
on disks around T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae/Be stars and Brown Dwarfs. The key
questions during this meeting were: what is our theoretical understanding
of these disks, how can we model them, and how do the models connect to the
observations and vice-versa?
