Observing the Big Bang
Observing the Big Bang
The intention of this course is twofold. The first goal is to
develop a deeper understanding of the Universe, and in particular
those aspects of our Universe which contain large amounts of information
about the evolution of the cosmos. The second goal is to develop a sense
of astonishment that one can construct a theoretical framework
in which to interpret the vast and diverse observational
cosmological dataset, and that this framework appears to be remarkably
consistent with the observations. We will discuss the successes
of this framework, and we will discuss also challenges that lay ahead.
- Course notes - These course notes
were originally written by Matthias Bartelmann, and I have updated and modified them considerably.
- A great introductory article by
Craig Hogan on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis from Deuterium.
- Two articles on the census of baryons Fukugita et al. 1998 and a short discussion of observing the warm-hot intergalactic medium
- A great introductory article by Wayne Hu and Martin White about CMB physics; and Wayne Hu's website.
- The ESO-ESA Joint Report in Fundamental Cosmology, Chaired by Peacock & Schneider - this forms an important part of the last half of the course.
