Introduction
This is the web site of the Max Planck Research Group led by Cornelis Dullemond, titled 'The formation of
planetary building blocks'. It started on December 1, 2006.
The goal of the group is to develop a better
understanding of the very first stages of planet
formation, in which sub-micron sized solid particles collide and stick,
forming ever bigger aggregates, and eventually lead to the formation of
multi-kilometer-sized planetesimals (i.e. the building blocks of
planets). The efforts of the group will be two-fold: on the one hand it will
involve the development of detailed theoretical numerical models of particle
growth and protoplanetary disk evolution; on the other hand it will apply
these models (and simplified versions of these) to analyze and interpret the
large variety of available observational data of young protoplanetary
systems. By combining these two efforts the group aims to clarify the
meaning of these observational data, and put strong constraints on models of
particle growth and motion, so that the fundamental processes governing the
formation of planetary building blocks can be better understood. More
details about the group science can be found on the research page.
What is this group?
The group is a Max Planck Research Group. The group is stationed at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy
in Heidelberg (MPIA), but it is funded by the Max-Planck-Society main
office. It is, however, in practice part of the Planet and Star
Formation group at the MPIA, and has strong collaborations with
the theory group of this department led by Hubert Klahr.
What's next:
During the winter semester 2010 and summer semester 2011 we will be in
a transitional period. Kees Dullemond is taking up a professorship at
the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA) at the
University of Heidelberg, and will, during the above mentioned
period, be half at the MPIA and half at the university. They are both
in the same city, which makes this relatively easy. From September 2011
onward he and his group will be 100% at the university.
