In Memoriam: Dr. Frithjof Brauer

We are profoundly sad that our team member, former PhD student, Reimar Luest Fellow and most importantly: dear friend, Frithjof Brauer, is no longer among us. He fought a courageous battle against cancer but ultimately lost. He passed away end of September 2009 at the age of 29. We miss his warm character, his enthusiasm for science, and his extraordinary talent, both in science and in music.

The team

Cornelis 'Kees' Dullemond (Group leader)

Research:
Disk structure and evolution models, aggregation and thermal modification of solids in the disk, link to observations. Leader of the group.

Tilman Birnstiel (Postdoc)

Research:
Works on improved models for the formation, evolution and structure of protoplanetary disks in which the dust physics calculated by this team is implemented. The effects of the disk evolution on the dust growth/fragmentation/drift is investigated using a new and powerful scheme for implicit integration of the coagulation+transport equation. Comparison with observations is his current occupation.

Zolt Sandor (Postdoc)

Research:
Works on N-body simulations of the late stages of rocky planet formation in gas-rich protoplanetary disks. Also works together with Z. Regaly on models of eccentric disks.

Chris Ormel (Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow)

Research:
From boulders to planetary cores: study how to link models of dust growth to models of planet formation by bridging the intermediate size regime with a combination of Monte Carlo and N-body simulations.

Paola Pinilla (PhD Student, funded by the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics)

Research:
Testing models of dust evolution and transport in protoplanetary disks with observations, mainly in the (sub-)millimeter range.

Previous members

Andras Zsom (former PhD Student, now postdoc with T. Henning)
