METIS Performance During the METIS study
we carried out detailed modelling of the instrument, to predict what
performance it will be capable of delivering at the telescope. This modelling
exercise is vitally important for ensuring that the chosen design can indeed
deliver the desired data. The figure below shows how METIS will compare with
other current and future facilities that cover the same wavelengths. The
sensitivities are calculated for point sources detected at 10-sigma in 1
hour, assuming a 20% overhead. Line sensitivities assume an unresolved
spectral line. Note that the spectroscopic sensitivities for the various instruments
cover a range of resolving powers.
