Large Molecular Filaments in the Milky Way

| We report on the results of a search for Giant Molecular Filaments (GMFs) in the Milky Way. We will discuss the methodology to find velocity-coherent filamentary structures, using a combination of extinction data from infrared surveys and kinematic data from the Galactic Ring Survey. In the talk we will discuss the properties of seven GMFs which have length scales of the order of 100 pc and total masses between 104 and 105 Msun. The GMFs we study appear to be inter-arm clouds and may be the Milky Way analogues to "spurs" observed in nearby spiral galaxies. | |
