Quenching and Quiescence - What slows down and stops star formation in Massive galaxies?

The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) is happy to announce the conference Quenching and Quiescense. This weeklong conference will take place July 14th - July 18th, 2014, at the MPIA in Heidelberg, Germany.

This workshop will provide a forum to discuss and develop understanding about the processes that stop star formation (quench) in galaxies and keep it stopped (quiescence). Current theory suggests the answers lie in the energetic output from supermassive black holes or from the high temperature gas produced as accreting gas shocks against the gaseous halos. However, some important questions remain to be answered about these mechanism. Additionally, recent observations have suggested that old stars could play a role in limiting star formation. This workshop will attempt to collect the observational and theoretical experts working on these subjects into one room to reveal their latest findings and discuss possible answers to these difficult questions.
